Why The Mets Should Say CaNo Thank You To The Mariners

Rumors are swirling that Seattle Mariners General Manager, Jerry Dipoto has been in contact with New York Mets General Manager, Brodie Van Wagenen about a potential trade which would send Robinson Cano to the Mets.

It would not be a smart decision by Van Wagenen if he does decide to acquire Cano. Here are the reasons why:

  1. Robinson Cano got busted and suspended last year for using performance enhancing drugs. Will Cano be able to play like his old all star self if clean? If he were to get caught using PEDs again, he would be suspended for the full season. Is this a risk the Mets can afford to take?
  2. Robinson Cano will be 36 years old this season. Father time is undefeated. Will he be able to play second base for the rest of his career and if not, what position could you put him at?
  3. Robinson Cano is due $24 million per season over the next five years. That is $120 million that the Mets could use to address more pressing issues with their team, such as the bullpen.
  4. Jeff McNeil needs to play everyday. McNeil hit .329 for the Mets last season and has earned the right to be the Mets starting second basemen in 2018. McNeil’s bat makes many believe he can be the next Daniel Murphy. If the Mets were to acquire Cano, McNeil would become a platoon player at best.
