With future opponents on his mind, Gervonta Davis set to face Ricard Nunez

The WBA has demanded it, and so it shall be done. Gervonta Davis will face Ricard Nunez on July 27 for Davis’ WBA Super Featherweight Championship. The event will be held in Baltimore and will be a Showtime-produced event.

Davis (21-0), a Baltimore native, will be making the second defense of his title that he won from Jesus Cuellar in April of 2018. His last fight was a first-round knockout win over Hugo Ruiz back in February. That was supposed to be one of his toughest opponents to date.

With 20 wins via KO, the protege of Floyd Mayweather has had numerous fighters line up to challenge him, but his team is looking for the right bout. One would assume that a Shakur Stevenson fight is on the horizon, but politics have halted that from happening. The WBA has decided they won’t wait any longer for Davis to fight, hence the matchup against Nunez.

When it comes to names, Ricardo Nunez (21-2) may not have a sexy one compared to Ruiz or Cuellar, but he is another experienced fighter. With 19 wins via KO, Nunez is in the same boat as Davis is. The biggest difference? The promotion and draw power of both fighters. While way out there in the rankings, Nunez could end up being a formidable challenger for the young Davis

Or, Nunez could very well be target practice for the knockout artist. This whole ordeal is just another wild turn of events in the boxing world.
