With gyms re-opening, at-home workouts may still be the best answer

It was a blessing for a lot of those who have been patiently waiting for the gyms to open back up since the shut down in March 2020 due to COVID. Though some of the thousands of people anticipating the re-opening of gyms are still a bit hesitant to re-enter the facility.

Wearing a mask while doing intense workouts or cardio could be nerve-wrecking for some people. Some of the worries including shortness of breath and acne due to sweating under the mask. Even little access to working water fountains at the gyms is a change.

As a personal trainer, I want to advocate for at-home workouts, if you are one of those people that are still hesitant to participate in the re-opening of gym facilities.

A great workout I did and have been sharing with clients, is finding a track nearby and using the track and the bleachers to do a great High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workout.

The HIIT Workout:

Track

First, sprint the straight line on the track. Once at the end, do 15 burpees and slowly jog the curve. For the rest of the track, do 15 jumping jacks, then sprint the straight line.

At the next curve, complete another set of 15 burpees, jog the curve, do 15 more jumping jacks and get back into sprinting the straight line.

Repeat this a total of eight times.

Bleachers

After the track portion, get on the bleachers and do stairs. Run up the bleachers and jog to the next set of stairs. After that, run back down the bleachers, jog over to the next set of steps and run back up the bleachers.

Repeat this another eight times.

Then, it’s time for an ab circuit on the turf.

Ab circuit – Do each exercise three times through for 45 seconds

Leg Raises

Leg Lifts

Plank

Mountain Climbers

Oblique Twists

Russian Twists

X Ups

The payoff

This HIIT workout left me very sore and was a fun exercise to do outdoors. Understandingly, staying indoors may be repetitive and could be boring if you are in the same scene each and every day. Getting outside and doing something different could make your workout more enjoyable.
