Yankees: Alex Rodriguez Issues Apology Letter

Another Alex Rodriguez apology is upon us.

Rather than going with the traditional press conference set up for his latest performance-enhancing drug mea culpa, Rodriguez instead decided to express his regrets to the media and fans through a hand-written letter. In the note he writes:

I take full responsibility for the mistakes that led to my suspension for the 2014 season. I regret that my actions made the situation worse than it needed to be. To Major League Baseball, the Yankees, the Steinbrenner family, the Players Association and you, the fans, I can only say I’m sorry.

I accept the fact that many of you will not believe my apology or anything that I say at this point. I understand why and that’s on me. It was gracious of the Yankees to offer me the use of Yankee Stadium for this apology but I decided the next time I am in Yankee Stadium, I should be in pinstripes doing my job.

I served the longest suspension in the history of the League for PED use. The Commissioner has said the matter is over. The Players Association has said the same. The Yankees have said the next step is to play baseball.

I’m ready to put this chapter behind me and play some ball.

This game has been my single biggest passion since I was a teenager. When I go to spring training, I will do everything I can to be the best player and teammate possible, earn a spot on the Yankees and help us win.

Rodriguez is coming off of a 162-game ban for his role in the Biogenesis scandal, which saw himself, Ryan Braun, Nelson Cruz and others suspended for PED use. Coincidentally, Anthony Bosch, the man behind the Miami-based Biogenesis clinic, was sentenced to four years in prison on Tuesday morning.

The idea to not go through with a public presser in favor of the letter seems like a cop out on Rodriguez’s part. The Yankees even offered Rodriguez Yankee Stadium as he tried to figure out how to say sorry. Instead he chose to write a letter, avoiding pressing media questions and the eyes of the public.

After everything that has happened, no one should believe a word Rodriguez says in regards to anything. He has proven time and time again to be a liar and a cheater. He has become impossible to trust. Still, he owes fans and reporters alike a chance to ask some real questions, opposed to hiding behind pen and paper.

Yankees fans and the brand really do deserve better from their one-time superstar turned parasite. At this point however, it would be naive to expect it.
