Yankees avoid disaster with Machado signing in San Diego

Well it’s safe to say the New York Yankees averted disaster when Manny Machado signed with the San Diego Padres for a record free agent deal of nearly $300M over 10 years.

Machado is a great player and will bring fanfare to San Diego, but we all know why he signed that deal, and it isn’t because the Padres are winning the World Series anytime soon.

While Machado did play in a World Series with the Dodgers and played quite well, he just doesn’t seem like the kind of player who handles the big media well. He turned down the Phillies offer as well as the White Sox, two major baseball cities.

The Yankees never offered Machado an official contract but if Machado did decide to take a plunge in New York he would have been eaten alive. You have to be a special kind of person to make it in the Bronx Zoo, and Machado just doesn’t seem to have it.

I may be completely wrong and Machado would have thrived with the Yankees, but based on his history and his new decision to take his talents to a small market, small media team with very little fan support shows he’s more about the money and the lifestyle than the winning. Can you blame him? Absolutely not. San Diego is one of the most beautiful cities in America. However, San Diego ain’t getting a World Series anytime soon.
