Baseball Yankees, Chapman agree to three-year extension by Chris Passarelli November 3, 2019 The New York Yankees took care of one of their pending free agents already, as they re-signed closer Aroldis Chapman to a three year, $48 million extension. Chapman had until midnight to opt out of his two year deal that would pay him $30 million per. Instead, the Yankees worked an extension for another year, adding $18 million to his contract. Chapman hasn’t been lights out, especially with a dip in velocity, but he was very effective last season and without him the Yankees would have a big hole in their bullpen. Dellin Betances is also a free agent so if he decides to go elsewhere, the Yankees will essentially have the same bullpen. The decision to re-sign Chapman was an easy one. Even though he isn’t nearly as dominating as he used to be, he’s still a very good closer and when he’s right is one of the best in the game. The final image of the Yankees’ season was Chapman smiling as Jose Altuve walked off the ALCS with a two run homer. That image will haunt Yankee fans forever, so hopefully it’s a motivator for Chapman to be even better next year.
