Baseball Yankees’ Gary Sanchez To Undergo Surgery by Kamelya Kizar November 7, 2018 New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez is set to undergo surgery on his left shoulder this week. Luckily, the surgery will be performed on Sanchez’s non-throwing shoulder. This was announced by New York general manager Brian Cashman on Wednesday during a GM meeting. According to the report, the Yankees expect Sanchez to be ready in time for the start of the 2019 regular season. Sanchez has been hindered by this injury since the 2017 season. Throughout the past two years, Sanchez has repeatedly been treated with cortisone shots. Unfortunately, Sanchez’s shoulder pain persisted. Last week at the Yankees’ minor league complex in Tampa, Sanchez felt continued shoulder pain while training with strength and conditioning coach, Matt Krause. A collective decision was then made to perform a debridement on the A/C joint. According to Brian Cashman, the operation will be performed by team physician, Dr. Christopher Ahmad. Two years ago, Sanchez hit .299 with 20 homers and 42 RBI. His success continued in 2017 when he hit .278 with 33 homers and 90 RBI in 122 games. Sanchez hit a career-worst this year. He batted .186 with 18 home runs and 53 RBI in 2018. He only played in 89 games due to injuries. Sanchez’s continuing pain may reveal why the star catcher has regressed in recent years. “It may very well have been something that affected him performance-wise. I can’t rule that out,” Cashman said. Sanchez is expected to be fully recovered by opening day. Cashman revealed that New York is content with starting Austin Romine if Sanchez is not fully recovered by opening day.
