Yankees legend Mel Stottlemyre passes away at 77

A longtime favorite Yankee passed away today at the age of 77. Mel Stottlemyre, one of the most underrated Yankees of all time, passed away on Monday morning after a long 20 year battle with bone marrow cancer.

Stottlemyre went 164-139 with a 2.97 ERA and was considered one of the best pitchers on the Yankees during their championship dry spell in the mid to late 60’s. Stottlemyre was a coach for the Mets from 1985 to 1993, and was a stable in the Yankees bullpen from 1996 t0 2005.

It’s no coincidence that Mel was the pitching coach for Doc Gooden, Sid Fernandez, Roger McDowell, Ron Darling, David Cone, Andy Pettitte, El Duque Orlando Hernandez, etc. You get the point, but the man was a genius.

Joe Torre’s right hand man was a fan favorite for both the Mets and Yankees and one of the most respected minds in baseball. He battled hard for 20 years and put up a hell of a fight against cancer. He will be missed by all baseball fans, and will be remembered very fondly. Rest In Peace Mr. Stottlemyre.
