Yankees Need Ace Type Game From Sabathia

When you sign a player to the contract which CC Sabathia got from the New York Yankees, you are expected to be the ace of the pitching staff. As the ace, you are expected to lead the staff. Part of that role is being a stopper. Being able to step up when the team needs you most.

Tonight is one of those times.

Sabathia has done it many times since joining the Yankees, but tonight they need him again. The Boston Red Sox have taken the first two games of the a three game series from New York. In fact, the Yankees have been pretty much embarrassed so far this series, and this season against Boston.

Freddy Garcia and A.J. Burnett put up duds in the first two games. Boston now holds the lead in the American League East. The Yankees can tie it back up on the back of the big man, CC Sabathia.

Easier said than done however. Sabathia will go up against Red Sox starter Josh Beckett for the third time this season. Beckett defeated Sabathia and the Yankees the first two times, shutting New York out for 14 combined innings.

The Yankees need a good game from Sabathia tonight. The bullpen needs a break. The fans and team need something positive to take out of this series as a four game weekend series against the Cleveland Indians follows.

In the previous two games of this series, the Yankees were down 4-0 after just two innings and forced to try to play catch up. Garcia got a quick hook and did not make it out of the second inning in the first game after giving up four runs. Burnett game up eight runs (seven earned) in 5.2 innings last night.

Sabathia will need to come out strong, something he often struggles with. The big lefty tends to start slowly and gets stronger as the game goes on. The Yankees need a vintage shut down game from Sabathia so they can get back on track.

This is why they pay their ace the big money. Games like this are why you have an ace. Hard to call a game a must win at this point in the season, but in early June this is as close as you will get to one.
