Matt Holliday (AP / Matt Rourke) Recent reports reveal that designated hitter Matt Holliday is expected to rejoin the Yankees in time for tonight’s game against the Red Sox. Holliday was put on the 10-day disabled list back on Aug. 6 when he was a victim of a lower back strain, or, more specifically, a left lumbar strain. The 37-year old began his rehabbing on Aug. 18 in Tampa where he spent most of team playing with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Prior to being put on the disabled list, Holliday was having a real difficult time trying to get back into good health. He was out for weeks from a viral infection. Holliday was also struggling at the plate. He only hit .135/.165/.198 with one homer and four RBIs in 20 games since the All-Star break. Before the break, he hit .262 with 15 launches in 68 games. The Oklahoma native also hit .250 with no home runs in nine minor-league rehab games. It’s been a tough second-half of the season for the veteran slugger. He’s been both a crucial and, somewhat, hampering role in this season’s success. It’ll ultimately be up to manager Joe Girardi to decide whether or not Holliday is still capable of being a lethal weapon for the team. Holliday signed with New York for a one-year $16-million deal that was proposed to him in the offseason. In addition to Holliday’s activation, the Yankees have also called up RHP Ben Heller, RHP Bryan Mitchell and LHP Jordan Montgomery from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as they continue to expand their 25-man roster to a 40-man.
