Michael Conforto going down after a big swing (Credit – Adam Hunger/AP) It was a normal at-bat for Michael Conforto, and then it all went wrong fast. The 24-year old outfielder left today’s (Thursday’s) game against the Diamondbacks after separating his left shoulder. Conforto swung and missed at a Robbie Ray fastball on a 2-0 count before dropping to the ground in severe pain. It was a scary sight to see. Conforto’s arm seemed to have went limp after the follow through on his swing. This is just another unfortunate situation for the team, who did provide some positive medical updates earlier today regarding several players. Conforto is currently going through a breakout year, hitting .279 with 27 home runs, a .384 OBP, and 68 RBIs in 109 games. He played in the same amount of games last season. This setback halts any momentum he may have had. httpss://twitter.com/sportingnews/status/900782065460940801 With several players leaving the team, Conforto has become the true franchise player. With Dominic Smith and Amed Rosario up, the Mets have shown they are committed to their youth movement, with Conforto leading the pack. It is unknown how long he will be out for. There may be a chance he may not be able to play the rest of the season. There is no good comparison for this sort of injury unfortunately. Former Met Darrell Ceciliani suffered the same injury in May and is out for the season. At this point, it would seem wise to let Conforto rest until next season. There doesn’t seem to be a need to rush anything, so let him start anew. With the recent history of the Mets’ medical staff, that would be wise.
