Travis Hamonic (Harry How/Getty Images) Travis Hamonic of the New York Islanders and Wayne Simmonds of the Philadelphia Flyers were nominated for the National Hockey League Foundation Player Award, on Tuesday. The Foundation Player Award is presented to the player that best exemplifies the core values of hockey, commitment, perseverance and teamwork, as they relate to their communities. The 30 member clubs submitted their nominees to the league and a judging panel who then selected the finalists. The NHL Foundation will donate 25,000 dollars to the favorite charity of the winning player. Hamonic, 26, has bonded with about 200 children who have lost a parent at a young age through his D-Partner Program. He has spent 50,000 dollars to host D-Partner participants at Islanders games, while providing VIP treatment and meet and greets with the children. Hamonic has also served as an event ambassador for the Children’s Wish Foundation and participated in several events, which include hospital and school visits, with the Islanders. Simmonds, 28, has raised more than 100,000 dollars through Wayne’s Road Hockey Warriors, an annual event held every summer that provide the youth in his hometown of Scarborough, Ontario, with the opportunity to learn and play hockey. He has run the event year since 2012. He also joined the board of the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation in 2014. One his off days he spends time with some of the kids from the foundation. Simmonds also purchased private suites at the Wells Fargo Center to welcome military personnel and Make-a-Wish children at Flyers games. Hamonic and Simmonds will find out which one of them will be selected as the NHL Foundation Player during the 2017 NHL Awards and Expansion Draft, which will be held at the T-Mobile Arena, the home of the league’s newest franchise, the Vegas Golden Knights on June 21 at 7:30 PM. NBCSN will televise the event in the United States, while Sportsnet will broadcast it for the Canadian viewers.
