529sandsblogsBridgewater, NJ-   The Somerset Patriots (24-14) defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish (20-18) 5-1 at TD Bank Ballpark on Monday afternoon.

Patriots starter Lucas Irvine (1-1) pitched seven strong innings, allowing just one run and scattering four hits for the win.

“I was staying in control and focused on pitching rather than just throwing,” said Irvine. “I think my last few outings I was really just throwing. Brett reminded me to just go out there, have fun, and pitch like some of my better starts earlier this year.”

The Patriots got on the board first with an RBI groundout by Jerry Sands in the opening frame.

The Bluefish tied up the game on an RBI single by Jonathan Galvez in the second inning.

Somerset jumped back in front in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI infield single by Justin Pacchioli and an RBI double by Sands.

“The guys in front of me are getting on. You obviously have to have guys getting on base to drive in so they’ve been doing their jobs well,” said Sands. “We’re putting pressure on the pitcher and hopefully I can get a pitch to hit to bring the guys home.”

Tyler Bortnick’s RBI single in the sixth inning made the score 4-1 and a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning by Pacchioli added to Somerset’s lead for the 5-1 final.

Jonathan Albaladejo (3-3) gave up four earned runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings pitched for the loss.

The 2017 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Friday, June 2nd when the Patriots return home for a 7:05 pm game against the Sugar Land Skeeters.  The game includes Cooler Bags (1st 2,000) presented by QuickChek. For tickets, visit www.somersetpatriots.com.
