New York Mets – Syndergaard, deGrom, Harvey (Mets Twitter)

Opening Day is just a few days away, and the Mets have set their rotation for their home opener against the Braves. We already know that Noah Syndergaard will start against Julio Teheran on April 3. Terry Collins announced that Jacob deGrom would be next, facing former teammate Bartolo Colon two days later. Matt Harvey will close out the series on April 6 against Jaime Garcia.

The choices for the Mets seemed to have come a little too easy. Syndergaard has had a great Spring Training, looking stronger than ever before. Choosing deGrom as the guy to pitch after Thor was a no-brainer. In 15 innings pitched this Spring, deGrom had a 2.93 ERA. His fastball velocity seems to have increased, which will be great if he wants to improve after an injury-filled season.

Choosing Harvey as the number three choice seemed obvious based off of his progress. Looking to get back into form, “The Dark Knight” looks leaner and ready to reclaim his throne as the best pitcher on the Mets, maybe even the MLB. Facing a veteran in Jaime Garcia, the Mets are hoping Harvey can lead the ship to safety.

When it comes down to after the Braves series, the Mets might have a small problem. It was reported by Newsday that Steven Matz will not be making the Opening Day roster due to injury. The team most likely won’t need a fifth starter until April 9th, giving them time for options. With one rotation spot reportedly filled by Robert Gsellman, it’s now a competition between Zach Wheeler and Seth Lugo. While it would be great if the whole band was together, that won’t be the case. Unfortunately, the top three starters on the team don’t have the durability factor to pitch the entire season alone.

For now, lets worry about April 3rd, the best day of 2017!

The news could not have come soon enough. Even with a few setbacks, the Opening Day plans for the Mets are final. In just a few short days fans can eat their peanuts and sing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” again! Watch out baseball world, the starting three for “The Amazins” are coming for you.
