New York Giants star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr sent shockwaves throughout the NFL world on Thursday night.

Unless you have been living under a rock, then you are aware that the fourth-year receiver is on the final year of his rookie contract. However, the Giants picked up the fifth year option on his deal, which is worth $8.459 million for the 2018 season.

On Thursday night, on an appearance on UNINTERRUPTED, Beckham let it be known to the world that he not only wants to be the highest paid receiver in the league, but also the highest paid player in the league.

“It’s like the elephant in the room, and you don’t want to talk about it,” said Beckham. “But I’ve gotten to the point in my life where I’m like, ‘No, I’m going to … there’s no need to not talk about it.”

“I believe that I will be hopefully not just the highest-paid receiver in the league, but the highest paid, period.”

In all honesty, we have heard this from various NFL players over the years. However, since it’s coming from Beckham, who is one of the most polarizing players in the NFL, this statement is met with a lot of criticism. The dancing, the confidence, and the emotion he has shown on the field has turned off a lot of fans. Not only that, but his decisions off the field, such as partying on a boat right before their playoff matchup against the Green Bay Packers, have set off the ire of many, including Giants fans.

Beckham has held out of OTA’s this Spring because of his contract situation, as reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN. However, Beckham has reported to the first day of Training Camp on Thursday, so there is focus by him on the 2017 season, not just his contract situation.

There’s no denying that Beckham is one of the more electrifying players in the league. Just look at the impact he has made in his first three years on the Giants. 288 receptions, 4122 yards, and 35 touchdowns. That’s insane numbers for a player who has only been in the league for a short amount of time. Without a doubt, the Giants know that.

In a recent interview with Steve Serby of The New York Post, Giants owner John Mara has expressed his desire for Beckham to be a “Giant for life.” Mara speaks about the impending contract negotiations with the NFL superstar.

“They haven’t begun as of yet, but … they’ll happen at the appropriate time,” said Mara. “I don’t think we have a time frame on it. But we certainly don’t want to see him playing in another uniform.”

Currently, the highest paid wide receiver in the league is Julio Jones of the Atlanta Falcons, who signed a five-year, $71.3 million contract in 2015. However, Beckham has to be looking much more than that, especially with the desire to be the highest paid player in the league. With Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr earning a five-year, $125 million contract in June, that has to be the financial figure that Beckham is looking to surpass.

Only time will tell if Beckham wishes are fulfilled, but he has already set the asking price before negotiations with the Giants front office.
