GLOW – Netflix (NME.com)

The wait is finally over! Netflix released the trailer for the upcoming GLOW documentary today. The 10-episode series starts June 23rd and it stars Alison Brie and Marc Maron. Professional wrestlers Awesome Kong (Kia Stevens) and Alex Riley also have key parts. Check out the awesome trailer:

According to the synopsis, the show:

“…tells the fictional story of Ruth Wilder (Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom when she’s thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women’s wrestling.” If that doesn’t get you somewhat excited, I don’t know what will.

How about the history behind the show? The series was inspired by the 1980’s TV series GLOW, or Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. The innovative show began as an aftermath of Jackie Stallone’s (Sylvester’s mom) physical fitness gym for women only, Barbarella’s. Mando Guerrero, the brother of Eddie Guerrero, trained all of the women. In an era where pro wrestling became a 24/7 job, GLOW was different. Based in California, the show had actual seasons where some wrestlers/actors were dropped, changed or added before a new season began.

The show was treated as good old entertainment, but it did help give women a platform to show they could do what men could. It appears that GLOW will look to do the same thing. It’s always exciting to see Alison Brie in a different role like this, and Awesome Kong seems to have a prominent role from the looks of the trailer.

GLOW’s creative team has a lot of success, coming from shows like Orange is the New Black, Nurse Jackie and Weeds. While there will be some comedy involved, the show is expected to have a powerful message for females everywhere, which is always good. A pro wrestling-related show with an inspiring message, nothing is better than that.

June 23rd can’t come soon enough!
