Jacob Rhame – Mets (MiLB.com)

In baseball, September is a time to look towards the future. Players from the minor leagues are getting the call to the majors to showcase what they can do. Think of it as a test run. The Mets are starting a big test by announcing the call-up’s of RHP’s Jacob Rhame and Jamie Callahan.

Both pitchers have been impressive in their new environment. Rhame was acquired from the Dodgers as the player to be named later in the Curtis Granderson deal. He pitched in four games for Triple-A Las Vegas, going 0-1 with a 1.50 ERA. He walked no batters and struck out 11. Between Oklahoma City and Las Vegas, he went 0-3 with a 4.00 ERA with 66 strikeouts. The Dodgers’ sixth-round selection in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft has 314 strikeouts and a 3.07 ERA in 214 career minor league games.

Rhame will wear #35 for the team.

Callahan was one of three relievers acquired from the Red Sox in exchange for Addison Reed. While with Boston, the 23-year old had a stat line of 56 Ks in 42 innings between Double and Triple A. In nine games for Las Vegas, Callahan was 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA. He also struck out 10. The Red Sox’s second-round pick in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, Callahan has a 27-26 record with a 4.71 ERA and 373 strikeouts.

Interestingly enough, Callahan will wear Reed’s old number, 43.

Both call-ups can help a tired Mets bullpen. For the remainder of the season, the team will keep a close eye on the pitchers with fastballs that can reach the mid-high 90’s. This tryout could also provide the Mets an inside look at potential options for the 2018 season. As the Mets look to compete in 2018, getting younger seems to be the theme. It will be interesting to see if Rhame and Callahan’s first audition will be their last.
