Baseball Mets sign GM Sandy Alderson to a contract extension Since 2010, Sandy Alderson has been working on getting the Mets and their fans a World Series title. by Daniel Yanofsky December 21, 2017 In the middle of one of the biggest Winter Meetings in baseball history, Mets fans have been hoping for the team to do something to make their team relevant. While signing Anthony Swarzak to a two-year, $14 million deal was considered a good move, the Flushing Faithful expected more. Well, the Mets did make a move, but not one they expected to break first. The team provided General Manager Sandy Alderson with a two-year extension on his contract. According to club sources, the term of the deal is unknown. In 2010, Sandy was appointed the new GM of the team after succeeding Omar Minaya. His previous deal with the Mets was a three-year deal that lasted through last season. Sandy spoke about the new deal, providing some energy for the upcoming season. “I feel that we have some unfinished business. Spring Training is around the corner and our quest to return to the postseason will continue.” The deal is a long time coming. Sandy was named the 2015 Baseball America Executive of the Year after his contributions which led the team to their first World Series since 2000. The next year, the team reached the NL Wild-Card Game, but lost to the Giants. The team regressed in 2017 however, mainly due to injuries. Pressure has been on the organization to compete, and a little breathing room for Sandy could help in the long run. While the deal was expected, it is considered poor taste given the timing. No big moves have been made by the Mets, minus the signing of a reliever and resigning some players. It is another example of bad timing by the team, regardless how effective the move may have been. Then again, there could be some overthinking when it comes to the fans of the Mets. To help hinder some doubts, the Yankees traded for Giancarlo Stanton after GM Brian Cashman was rumored to be getting a five-year extension. Baseball’s resident Maverick will continue to man the ship. Do fans believe more crew members will join the team after this deal? Only time will tell, but it is ticking fast.
