Tyler Pill (MLB.com)

It appears the Rafael Montero experiment is officially over. A day after lasting only three innings and allowing three runs against the Padres, the Mets sent him down to the minors. In a corresponding move, the team brought up Tyler Pill, who will join the team in Pittsburgh tonight. MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo was the first to report the news.

Tyler Pill, the Mets’ fourth-round Draft pick in 2011, has arrived at a time when the team is struggling in all area’s on the field. The 26-year old has a career 4.01 ERA in the minors. No need to write him off as a result of that, as he has a 1.96 ERA this season with 23 strikeouts and 14 walks in Las Vegas.

With the recent reshuffling of the Mets’ rotation, we could see Pill debut sooner rather than later. The team may use him as early as Tuesday against the Brewers. It is unknown if he will be a member of the bullpen first. With the way the relievers have been struggling recently, he could be used in some capacity.

An interesting tidbit: He will be the first pitcher to make the majors that Tim Tebow has homered off of. Does that mean that the power of Tebow has rubbed off onto him? We shall wait and see.

This will be another test for the Mets in a season filled with despair. Tyler Pill may not be “the answer”, but the Mets need someone to produce for them now more than ever.
