Magnus Hellberg (Hartford Wolf Pack)

With New York Rangers’ goaltender Henrik Lundqvist out two to three weeks due to lower-body injury, General Manager Jeff Gorton has called up Magnus Hellberg from the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL on an emergency basis.

Emergency basis means that a player can be called up to meet the NHL’s minimum roster requirements, regardless of the waiver stipulations in their contract. However, when the player that is replaced (in this case Lundqvist) returns to the active roster, the player brought up on emergency basis returns to their previous team. Given that the NHL requires a minimum of two active goaltenders, Hellberg will be active alongside Antti Raanta until Lundqvist returns.

While Hellberg sits at an 11-11-5 record in 31 games and a 2.91 GAA this season, he has allowed 2 or less goals in six of his last nine appearances in net while coming off of a win in his last start stopping 26 of 27 shots. His recent performance may give the young Ranger some extra confidence if he sees any time in net over the next couple of weeks.

Having only seen the ice once this year for the Rangers against the Dallas Stars back in January, there is little that can be said about his experience. He only faced four shots that game and stopped them all, but it could be risky business for the Blueshirts if this young goaltender has to make his starting debut before Lundqvist’s return while the team tries to hold onto their wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.
