The National Women’s Hockey League on Wednesday announced that New York Riveters forward, Janine Weber was named Player of the Week. The Providence College graduate put up a fantastic weekend for the Riveters this past weekend in the team’s historic come from behind victory. She used her signature move on a shorthanded snipe over the glove hand of Connecticut Whale goalie, Nicole Stock. With the Riveters trailing, 5-2 just over two minutes into the final period, Weber found the back of the net for her second of the game, and helped to spark the comeback. She also picked up an assist on Michelle Picard’s goal which cut the deficit to 5-3 and completed her four-point night with an assist on Courtney Burke’s overtime, game winning goal. The Austrian born center, is tied for third goals with nine, her 10 assists are fourth in the NWHL. With 19 points, Weber trails only Boston Pride forward, Alex Carpenter in the scoring race for the league. Weber and the Riveters currently sit in second place in the NWHL. New York heads to Boston on March 4 before returning home on March 12 for the season finale against the Pride as they begin their “Sprint to the Isobel Cup.” Weber also holds the distinction of having a stick in the Hockey Hall of Fame as wells as being the first player to sign a contract in the NWHL.
