While the bullpen for the Mets has had its ups and downs, the rotation has been somewhat disappointing. Injuries have derailed several stars from showing what they can really do. Steven Matz has been waiting for his moment to return to the team, and he could be back in Flushing soon.

The 26-year old Matz has been suffering from a sprained flexor tendon that has made him miss the entire start of the 2017 season. He made his second rehab start for Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday. He pitched five innings of no-hit ball while striking out eight and giving up zero walks. An impressive stat line, considering he threw 73 pitches.

Sandy Alderson stated we could be seeing Matz on the main roster as soon as after his next rehab performance. Matz will look to expand his pitch count and innings pitched the next time out. With Seth Lugo looking to come back at the same time, we could see Robert Gsellman move into a role in the bullpen.

After coming out of nowhere in 2015, Steven Matz had an interesting 2016 campaign. He went 9-8 with a 3.40 ERA in 22 starts last season. Injuries have plagued him over his short career, and fans are waiting to see what he can really do. If he continue’s to impress and his dominating performance rolls over to the majors, Matz can provide a big spark the Mets desperately need.
