Steven Matz Placed On The 10-Day IL

Matz has a 3-2 record with a 3.86 ERA in seven games this season.

The way he has been playing, it was only a matter of time until we found out something was wrong with Steven Matz. It turns out it was not a theory, as Matz was placed on the ten-day IL with radical nerve discomfort.

In seven games, Matz has a 3-2 record with a 3.86 ERA. He has 32 strikeouts but has given up 15 runs. The overall way he has been pitching makes it appear he was pitching hurt. In 78 career games with the Mets, Matz has a 23-28 record and a 3.97 ERA.

As a corresponding move, the Mets recalled Dominic Smith from Triple-A Syracuse. Smith was sent down last week, his future uncertain. While in the minors Smith hit .222 wth one double and one RBI. In 29 regular season games before being sent down, Smith was hitting .333.

With Matz indisposed, the Mets will rely on newly-acquired RHP Wilmer Font to hold down the fort. With time running out on the Mets’ patience with Matz, the climb back up to the top will be as important as ever for the 27-year-old.
