Jeurys Familia – New York Mets (NY Daily News)

The Mets’ season so far can be described as an injury bonanza. It looks like the injury bug has bit another key player. Closer Jeurys Familia has been diagnosed with an arterial clot in his right shoulder. He will see Dr. Robert Thompson in St. Louis today to discuss the possibility of surgery.

Thompson is the surgeon who performed Matt Harvey’s operation last July for thoracic outlet syndrome. While the chances of avoiding surgery are minor, the Mets are hoping for good news. This is a very interesting situation for Familia, who has compiled three saves and a 3.86 ERA in 11 appearances since returning from a 15-game suspension. For those who don’t remember, he was suspended for violating Major League Baseball’s joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy.

For now, Addison Reed has taken back closing duties for the Mets. The Mets have pointed out that they are looking for outside help now due to all of the setbacks. The amount of bad luck the team has been getting is astounding. At some point, something is sure to go their way. When is the real question on everyone’s minds.

Something did seem off with Familia during Wednesday’s game. Anyone with good eyes could tell he had no command. As I was watching in disbelief at Citi Field, something definitely didn’t seem right. The end result? A blown save that ended up costing the Mets the game agains the Giants. Speaking to the media, Familia stated his arm felt fine. Everything doesn’t appear to be fine now. Jeurys Familia will most likely join a DL that includes Yoenis Cespedes, Steven Matz, Seth Lugo and Noah Syndergaard, among others.

Treatment for a clot like this differs for most. For example: Tom Glavine had a blood clot in his left shoulder in 2006, but did not have surgery. On the opposite side of the coin, Dillon Gee missed the remainder of the 2012 season after having surgery on a blood clot in his right shoulder.

It is unsure if its the time off that affected him, or the stress that Terry Collins has been giving the bullpen recently. Familia has been a reliant member of the Mets’ bullpen for quite some time. Enough stress in the arm may have just pulled the trigger.

In what has become the norm: Panic City is only a sharp turn away for the Mets.
