Going streaking! The Mets are on an Amazin’ run to start the 2018 season

For all teams, the beginning of the season is an opportunity to set the pace for the upcoming year. It may be early, but with the way the Mets are playing, 2018 is looking to be a season to remember.

Last night, the Mets stormed back and beat the Marlins 8-6. Like previous efforts by Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz, Jacob deGrom was good, but had a few messy innings in the latter half of the game. Clutch home runs by Wilmer Flores, his first of the year, and two throughout the game by Asdrubal Cabrera kept the Mets alive. Those two home runs were from both sides of the plate. It was Cespedes, struggling with flu-like symptoms, who provided the team with the lead for good with an RBI double. Jeurys Familia threw a scoreless ninth inning to seal the deal. He also became the seventh pitcher in major league history with six saves in a teams first ten games.

With that win, the team is now 9-1 on the season, surpassing the squads from the 1985 and 2006 seasons for the best start in team history. In another words, the team is going streaking, just not through the quad and into the gymnasium. Instead, it’s through the hearts of the teams they face. Want to hear another Amazin’ stat? In the 23 innings the Mets have allowed runs in, the team has scored 12 times after in their next at bat. We may just have to call this generation of Mets players the Comeback Kids.

What have we learned so far in just a few games? This Mets team won’t back down, making any game extremely interesting.

With a new regime, comes new motivation. Manager Mick Callaway’s new way of running things might have loosened the team to feel more confident in themselves. He certainly thinks it’s the case after speaking to the media following the game.

“It’s just a relaxed confidence. Guys are just going out there and playing. They aren’t pressing. They’re super relaxed. When you can do that, that’s when you play your best.”

Thanks to the veteran leadership of Todd Frazier, Jay Bruce and Adrian Gonzalez, the boys from Flushing are the talk of the town. It’s not just the big guns that are coming through in the clutch. Amed Rosario, Juan Lagares and even the pairing of Kevin Plawecki and Travis d’Arnaud have produced in some way or another.

Being that this is baseball, streaks are going to be broken. The current bullpen won’t be able to perform like that have been every night. Even hitters are bound to get cold. With yesterday’s RBI double, Cespedes is currently 2-for-22, with those two hits being clutch, go-ahead run-producing hits. It’s a cause for concern that will hopefully fade on it’s own. When the entire team is one unit, including “La Potencia” and the mighty rotation, there is unlimited possibilities for this Mets squad.

The true test for the Mets will be when the calendar hits mid-June to July. Can this team continue to surprise the baseball world? Believing is one thing, doing is another. In 2015, the Mets went on a run that was unheard of, leading them to a World Series appearance. Maybe 2018 might just be the year they shock us all again.
