Baseball Update on Jacob deGrom: No structural damage, expected to make next start After the worst was thought on Wednesday, Thursday brought some good news for the Mets on the status of Jacob deGrom by Daniel Yanofsky May 3, 2018 As night turned to day, the anticipation was growing among Mets fans. A few hours went by since Jacob deGrom hyperextended his right elbow, and there was fear of a huge setback for the ace of the Mets. For now, a sigh of relief can be exhaled among the Flushing faithful. After an MRI was performed, the Mets announced that there was no structural damage in deGrom’s arm. He is expected to make his next scheduled start on Monday. The team will monitor him in the case of a setback. If one was to take place, the rumored amount of time missed by deGrom would be four starts. Speaking to the media today, manager Mickey Callaway emphasized the importance of keeping a close eye on him. “We’re going to really home in on him and make sure everything is 100 percent. It felt good to sit there and hear that news and talk to Jacob, just knowing that he’s in a better spot than we thought coming out of the game last night.” It appears that the era of Ray Ramirez truly is over. While it was questionable for manager Mickey Callaway to keep deGrom in the game after the 29-year old said his arm was hurting, he managed to avoid a huge controversy. If the worst possible scenario took place, it would be his first major mistake as manager. Monday will be a big test for deGrom. After having surgery on the same arm in 2016, he dominated the scene in 2017. Before this recent scare, deGrom was sporting a 1.87 ERA, good for fifth in the National League. Will the same results come into play, or will there be lingering pain from a freak hitting incident? Only time will tell. Until those questions get answered, try to distract yourself.
