Hockey Ashley Johnston and Kiira Dosdall Re-Sign with the New York Riveters by Chip Gianni April 12, 2016 (NWHL) The New York Riveters announced on Tuesday that Ashley Johnston and Kiira Dosdall will be returning for the 2016-2017 National Women’s Hockey League season. General Manager, Chad Wiseman made the announcement that both players each signed a one-year deal worth 13,500 dollars. The two players logged major minutes manning the blueline for the Riveters during the 2015-2016 season. Wiseman said, “Johnston earned the respect of her teammates not only due to her competitive nature and work ethic on the ice, but how she handled herself as a professional off the iced as well.” He added, “Stretch (Johnston) rose to the occasion last season facing opposing teams top lines. We are thrilled to have her back.” In 16 games last season, Johnston put up seven points, one goal and six assists. She also appeared in both playoff games versus the eventual NWHL champions, the Boston Pride. The Burlington, Ontario native was honored for her leadership by named the first captain of the Riveters. Johnston said, “Next year, I hope to bring leadership and a never give up work ethic. I am ecstatic to be back with the Riveters and can’t wait to start getting some W’s.” Dosdall appeared in 18 games and both playoff games, while notching a total of eight points, two goals and six assists last season. Wiseman said, “Dosdall may have been one of the most underrated defensemen in the league last season, she is a big strong physical presence, has a great first pass, sees the ice well and has a great attitude. We expect Kiira to continue to be part of our leadership group this coming season.” Dosdall added, “I am incredibly honored and excited to be signing a new contract with the Riveters. I can’t wait to build off of the momentum of the inaugural season, and together with the returning players, further cement the core value of Riveters hockey: hard work, modesty and teamwork.” The restricted free agency period runs through April 30, with full free agency beginning on May 1 running through July 31. The NWHL Draft will take place on June 18.
