Derek Jeter – Jeb Bush –Miami Marlins (New York Daily News) A New York Yankees legend and a politician have won an auction to purchase the Miami Marlins. According to The Miami Herald, a group led by Derek Jeter and Jeb Bush submitted a bid of $1.3 billion to take the team from owner Jeffrey Loria. httpss://twitter.com/flasportsbuzz/status/856941042188271617 The group has more than five investors in it, so the roles both Bush and Jeter would have are unknown. Jeter does plan on having an active role with the team if the deal is official. If there is a transaction, there is still one obstacle to go through. The deal would need the approval of 75% of MLB owners. Miami Marlins president David Samson was very brief to The Miami Herald when asked his opinion on the matter. He stated: “I have not commented on the process and plan to keep it that way; thank you.” The sale could not have come at a better time. For years, the Marlins had talent that could bring them to the promised land. The main issue? Jeffrey Loria. The 76-year old bought the Marlins in 2002 for $158.5 million. Loria has spent a lot of money on talent that has been recycled through their system the moment things have gone wrong for them. He is also responsible for giving away hot talent like Miguel Cabrera. Jeter’s presence could be a game-changer for the team. He could help spark fan interest based off of his popularity. The former Yankee captain also understands major league players more than anyone. He could convince hot talent to show up at Marlins Park with the promise of doing whatever it takes to win another World Series. This is also a huge step for him, going straight into the business side of baseball after retiring in 2014. As for Jeb, this would be a huge win for him after the recent election. His brother George has experience with a team as a part-owner of the Texas Rangers in the 90’s. Jeb was the former Governor of Florida from 1999 to 2007, so his connections around the area could benefit the team as well. It will be odd seeing Jeter being the center of attention with a new team, but thats just one factor that makes this whole situation entertaining. The potential deal for the Miami Marlins makes for a very interesting storyline for baseball over the next few years.
