Hockey Metropolitan Riveters to Face Off with Lulea Hockey at Princeton University by Chip Gianni September 7, 2018 The Inaugural Champions Cup between the National Women’s Hockey League and the Swedish Women’s Hockey League between the Metropolitan Riveters and Lulea Hockey will take place at the iconic Hobey Baker Rink at Princeton University on Saturday September 29 at 1:00 PM. The matchup between the defending Isobel Cup Champion Riveters and SDHL Champs, Lulea Hockey will mark the very first battle between champions of the professional women’s ice hockey leagues in North American and Europe. Tickets to the game between the two champions are available at https://www.seetickets.us/event/2018-Champions-Cup/370479, and will cost 20 dollars for general admission seating at the 2,000 seat venue. NWHL Commissioner and Founder, Dani Rylan said, “The inaugural Champions Cup, in partnership with our friends at the SDHL is the first-ever game between professional women’s hockey champions in North America and Europe. We believe Baker Rink is the perfect setting for this historic event, and we thank our friends at Princeton for welcoming us at this historic event.” Hobey Baker Rink has become one of the most storied arenas within college hockey in the ninety years of its existence. The classic barn has undergone a number of renovations over the years, which should help to make the perfect backdrop for this international event. SDHL Commercial Director, Angelica Lindeberg said, “Like our colleagues at the NWHL, the SDHL believes strongly in collaboration across all leagues to help push women’s hockey forward. We’re looking forward to competing in this groundbreaking event, and we’re pleased that its being held at such a prestigious university as Princeton. May the best team win!” The New Jersey university rings near and dear to three members of the reigning Isobel Champions. Riveters defender, Kelsey Koelzer and forward, Fiona McKenna played for the Tigers, while forward, Kelly Nash serves as an assistant coach at Princeton. After the historic faceoff with the SDHL Champions, the Riveters will head to St. Paul, Minnesota to take on the NWHL’s newest franchise, the Minnesota Whitecaps on October 6 and October 7. They will continue their road trip on October 13 as they visit the Boston Pride. The Riveters return home to the RWJ Barnabas Health Hockey House, on October 20, at 2:00 PM, as they raise the 2018 Isobel Cup Champion banner in before taking on the Whitecaps.
