Mets Trade For Rays Pitcher Wilmer Font

Font has a career 6.51 ERA in 37 career major league games.

Although the Mets are not budging when it comes to offering Dallas Keuchel a deal, they needed to do something to help out a depleted rotation and bullpen. The team ended up looking outside of their division for a temporary answer.

It was announced that the team made a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays for RHP Wilmer Font in exchange for cash considerations or a player to be named later.

This season, Font has a 5.79 ETA with 18 strikeouts and five walks in ten appearances. The 28-year-old has gone back and forth as a starter and reliever, starting five games for the Rays last season. He also played for the Dodgers and A’s. Font only played in 19 games last season due to a late strain he suffered in June.

Yoenis Cespedes was moved to the 60-day IL. With Jeurys Familia, Luis Avilan, Justin Wilson, Steven Matz and Jason Vargas all hurting, the Mets were getting desperate. Not desperate enough to go for a big-time arm, but Font’s numbers have proven he could be reliable when called upon.
