510kellyblogsBridgeport, Conn. – The Somerset Patriots (14-6) swept a doubleheader against the Bridgeport Bluefish (10-10) Wednesday at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard, taking game one 4-3 and game two 9-1.

Somerset opened the scoring in the top of the second inning in game one on a Jerry Sands solo home run. Justin Pacchioli’s RBI single in the top of the third doubled the Patriots’ lead to 2-0.

Aharon Eggleston would increase the Somerset lead to 3-0 in the fifth before Bridgeport’s comeback began. A fifth-inning solo home run from Santiago Nessy, a two-out RBI double from David Fields in the sixth and a two-out Jose Cuevas RBI single in the seventh tied the ballgame at 3-3.

In the next half inning, Adam Donachie launched a go-ahead RBI double to straight-away centerfield to put Somerset back in front 4-3.

Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision. Ryan Kelly (1-0) earned the win after allowing an unearned run in one inning of relief. Frank DeJulio Jr. (0-3) took the loss, yielding one run on three hits in one inning of relief. Ronnie Shaban (1) earned his first save of the year with a scoreless eighth.

The Patriots started the scoring in game two in the first inning on an Sands RBI groundout. Two more runs would score in the second – including a Scott Kelly RBI single – before Sands’ two-run homer in the third increased Somerset’s lead to 5-0.

Three more Patriots’ runs would come home to score in the fifth, including a Sands RBI single and two run-scoring groundouts. Somerset topped off their scoring in the seventh on a Pacchioli RBI single, while the Bluefish added a run on an RBI double from Nessy to finalize the score at 9-1.

David Kubiak (1-2) earned the win, thanks to five scoreless innings on four hits with six strikeouts. Jonathan Albaladejo (2-1) took the loss after he yielded eight runs on 11 hits in five innings of work.

The Patriots travel down to Waldorf, Maryland Thursday to open up a four-game series against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. RHP Lucas Irvine will make his fourth start of the season for Somerset against Southern Maryland righty Gaby Hernandez.
