Baseball Pete Alonso named NL Rookie of the Month Alonso’s nine home runs before May tie a Mets club record. by Daniel Yanofsky May 2, 2019 Less than three months ago, it was unknown if Pete Alonso would be on the Mets’ Opening Day roster. Now, the rookie is putting the team on his back to open the 2019 season. The league has been watching and has honored him as a result. Alonso was named the NL Rookie the Month for March and April. The Rays’ Brandon Lowe was awarded the honor on the American League side. In the first 29 games of his major league career, the 24-year-old Alonso had a .292/.382/.642 slash line with nine home runs and 26 RBIs. His nine home runs are tied for the most by a member of the Mets before May 1. The others are Neil Walker, John Buck, Carlos Delgado and Dave Kingman. Alonso’s power has been something to behold to start the season. His home runs have come at clutch times and the distance in which they travel out of the park is out of this world. With one accolade out of the way, Alonso can continue his path to superstardom. If his hot start remains steady throughout the entire season, we could see him run away with the Rookie of the Year in a very crowded NL field.
