The New York Rangers waived Dylan McIlrath on Tuesday, meaning he will either be claimed by another team in the NHL or fall down to the Rangers AHL affiliate in Hartford.

There’s a good chance it will not be the latter option as McIlrath is still young and on a pretty cheap contract of only $800,000 for the season. It is an unfortunate splitting of the two because even as recently as last season McIlrath was viewed as a future top four Rangers defenseman by some.

However, things changed quickly after McIlrath played only 34 games last season and one this season the Rangers had seen enough. During those 35 games he managed only two goals and two assists while racking up 64 penalty minutes.

If the 24 year old does clear waivers, there’s still a chance he could hone his game in Hartford and return to the Rangers as an improved product, but as of now, the Rangers are moving on from him in the present and more than likely in the future as well.
