Report: Kevin Gilbride to be the next coach of the XFL’s New York team

One of the most successful coaches in New York Giants history may be returning to help out Vince McMahon’s XFL. It is being reported that Kevin Gilbride will come out of retirement to become the new head coach of New York’s unnamed XFL team. This is stemming from a report by Jay Glazier.

A two-time Super Bowl winner with the Giants, Gilbride was the offensive coordinator with the team from 2007 until his retirement after the 2013 season. He was originally the quarterback’s coach in 2004 before the transition. Gilbride’s career can be brought back to 1974 when he was the linebackers coach for Idaho State. His only pro experience as a head coach was with the San Diego Chargers from 1997-98, where he went 6-16 with the team.

Gilbride has also served other NFL teams, whether it be the Bills, Jaguars or the Houston Oilers. The Connecticut native is slated to join Bob Stoops, Jim Zorn, Marc Trestman and Pep Hamilton as former coaches or coordinators in Vince McMahon’s XFL revival.

The XFL, an original concept in 2001, is scheduled to return in 2020.
