Seven Players From NJ Qualifying Set to Compete in U.S. Open at Oakmont County Club

The second major of the golf season begins today and among the 156 golfers competing at the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, seven players from the Summit, New Jersey Sectional Qualifying will take part.

Shell Houston Open champion James Herman of Palm City, Florida, first-year PGA Tour player Rob Oppenheim of Orlando, Florida, Web.com Tour player Andy Pope of Orlando, Florida, two-time Metropolitan Golf Association player of the year Michael Miller of Brewster, New York, PGA Tour player Justin Hicks of Wellington, Florida and amateur Christopher Crawford of Bensalem, Pennsylvania all qualified from the 36-hole event held at Canoe Brook Country Club (North & South Courses) back on June 6.

Kevin Foley of Jupiter, Florida (by way of Somerville, New Jersey) was one of two players to earn alternate spots and Foley, who was the first alternate, was one of the last players to make the field on Monday.

The 29-year-old and Penn State graduate Foley, who is playing in his first major and is one of 27 players who advanced to this year’s U.S. Open through both local and sectional qualifying, won the 2013 Panama Claro Championship on the Web.com Tour.

Defending champion Jordan Spieth will be looking for his third major championship and will try to become the ninth player ever to hoist the U.S. Open trophy at Oakmont Country Club, which will set up at 7,219 yards and will play to a par of 35-35–70.
