Baseball Severino Fans Eight, but Thunder falls to Ducks in the 10th The 21-year-old right -hander gave up just one hit over five innings striking out eight. by Diane Quail April 15, 2015 (MLB) The Yankees number one prospect, Luis Severino, exceeded expectations in his 2015 debut showing exactly why he is getting so much attention. The 21-year-old right -hander gave up just one hit over five innings striking out eight Akron batters. In an early pitching duel, the Trenton Thunder bats struck first in the fifth off a leadoff double by Eric Jagielo. Dante Bichette Jr. brought Jagielo in on a triple to left. Bichette later scored on a Mason Williams single. Greg Bird added to the lead in the 6th with his first homerun of the 2015 season, however it was not enough to keep the Thunder on top. After throwing just 53 pitches, 42 of which were strikes, Severino left the game and Cesar Vargas entered. Vargas gave up three runs in the 6th tying the game at three. However, the Thunder was able to regain the lead in the 8th. Jose Rosario drew a walk and Jake Cave ripped a double to center putting two runners in scoring position. With two outs, Grant Sides threw a wild pitch and Jose Rosario came in. This lead did no last long, with one out, second baseman Todd Hankins tripled on a fly ball to right. Center fielder, Jordan Smith brought Hankins in on a single to Jake Cave in center. With a runner on third, the Thunder bats were unable to bring the go-ahead run home in both the ninth and tenth innings. Kyle Haynes started the bottom of the tenth giving up a walk to Jeremy Lucas. With Justin Toole batting, Haynes threw a wild pitch and Lucas went to second. With two outs, Erik Gonzalez hit a single to center and Lucas scored the go ahead run. The Thunder and Rubber Ducks conclude the series Wednesday afternoon. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:05.
