Baseball Somerset Patriots Sign RHP Arik Sikula by Somerset Patriots March 10, 2016 Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots have announced the signing of right-handed relief pitcher Arik Sikula. “Speaking with some other guys around minor league baseball, I am very grateful for the opportunity to play in Somerset,” said Sikula. “I had probably the best baseball conversation I have ever had with [manager] Brett [Jodie] the other day, and I told him I have always seen myself as a versatile pitcher that can help out across the bullpen. It is going to be fun playing for a pitcher.” Sikula enters his first season both with the Somerset Patriots and in the Atlantic League. The 27 year-old has five years of service in minor league baseball; all with the Toronto Blue Jays organization. Last year, Sikula split time between High-A Dunedin and Double-A New Hampshire, where he recorded five saves 28 relief appearances. Additionally, he recorded a 2.20 ERA over 32.2 innings of work for Dunedin. The Marshall University alum’s best season came in 2014, where he also split time between Dunedin and New Hampshire. Overall, Sikula posted a 3-1 record with a 2.01 ERA, 31 saves and 80 strikeouts against just 12 walks over 58.1 innings pitched. His 31 saves with Dunedin led the Florida State League that season. In three of his five professional seasons, Sikula has registered a strikeout-per-nine-inning ratio of greater than 9.0, including an impressive 12.3 K/9 overall in 2014. “Arik is a young righty who has put up very impressive numbers during his career,” manager Brett Jodie said. “He is a strike thrower with high strikeout totals. Arik also has a lot of experience late in ballgames, with much success. We are excited to get him in camp and see what role best suits him.” The 2011 Blue Jays draft pick owns a 13-5 record over his five-year professional career, including a 2.63 ERA, 66 saves and 237 strikeouts in 225.2 innings of work. The Somerset Patriots won their Atlantic League leading sixth championship during the 2015 season.
