Sweet 50! Aaron Judge Breaks Rookie Home Run Record

Aaron Judge has mashed his way to break a rookie record once held by “Bash Brother” Mark McGwire

If anything, 2017 is the season in which home runs made a comeback. The record for the most home runs in a single season (2000) has been broken and continues to expand. Aaron Judge is an accomplice to all of this, but he was also working on making history of his own. He did that yesterday, hitting home runs 49 and 50 to become the new MLB record holder for most home runs in a rookie season. He surpassed Mark McGwire, who hit 49 in 1987.

Game after game, fans were in awe over Judge’s mammoth shots. As the season progressed, the countdown to greatness was inevitable. Judge hit the historic shots against the Royals, his 50th homer off of Trevor Cahill in the seventh inning. The Yankees ended up beating the Royals 11-3. With those shots, Judge has now hit a home run against every member of the American League. He is the fifth player to hit 50 home runs in a season as a Yankee. The other four are Babe Ruth, who did it four times, Mickey Mantle, who did it twice, Roger Maris and Alex Rodriguez.

Aaron Judge came into this season hoping to make an impact with a rebuilding team, and boy did he ever. As a result of his hard work, among other factors, the Yankees are heading to the playoffs. Speaking to MLB.com, CC Sabathia, one of the last remaining members of the 2009 Yankees World Series team, praised Judge for what he has done for the team this season. He also stated his credentials should put him in consideration for MVP.

“Hitting 50 home runs, carrying this team to the playoffs, we can honestly say we are in this spot because of him. That’s what an MVP is.”

Regardless if Judge deserves MVP or not, he has been on a role. Including those two yesterday, he now has 13 home runs in September, and has seven in his last seven games. As a result of his success, the Yankees have new life in them.

The 25-year old Judge seems to be heating up again after a dreadful post-All-Star Game slump in which he struck out in 37 consecutive games. This newfound momentum is good timing for the surging Yankees. In a career year, Aaron Judge may just be getting started. Yankee fans are ecstatic to see Judge’s progression in the playoffs and beyond.
