The long road to recovery begins for Yoenis Cespedes after second heel surgery

Since 2017, Cespedes has only played in 119 games for the Mets

Another surgery for Yoenis Cespedes might affect plans to return earlier than expected. The Mets announced that the 33-year-old outfielder underwent surgery on his left heel this past Friday.

This surgery was to remove bone calcification, and it was performed by Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte. Cespedes received a similar procedure on his right heel in August. A recurring issue for Cespedes, it is another setback for the man the Mets have signed through the 2020 season. Since 2017, he has only played in 119 games for the Mets. Cespedes is set to make $29.5 million in both 2019 and 2020.

As far as on-field work is concerned, it is not looking so good. According to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo, Cespedes is not expected to perform any physical activities until at least March. That would mean a return to major league play won’t seem possible until around May or June.
