Who is the Somerset Patriots best early bat?

Six games and two hard-fought series later, the Somerset Patriots sit in second place in the Liberty Division with a 4-2 record.

Maintaining a winning record early in the season is not uncommon for the six-time Atlantic League Champions. After taking two of three games from New Britain, they have won their opening series for the past four years. So who in the batting order has been a catalyst for their early success? Well, it isn’t just one guy.

Outfielder Ramon Flores currently sits on top of the league boasting a .429 batting average and went a 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI in the concluding game of the inaugural series against High Point. Flores also has a total on base percentage of .440.

First-year Patriot infielder Will Kengor has proven he belongs in the league and is quickly making a name for himself in Somerset. The 26-year old Pittsburgh native ranks third in the league behind High Point’s Hector Gomez who sports a .412 average. Gomez also ranks second in the league in RBIs with 12. Kengor has also reached base in each of his six games.

Although the Patriots might have the second lowest hit total through their first six games, they are second in the league in on base percentage and are tied with High Point for the second most runs scored, 51.

Infielder Craig Massey has provided a strong leadoff bat for Somerset thus far as well. After going 3-for-4 against High Point on Wednesday, the 2018 Atlantic League batting champ is continuing to fuel the batting order. Massey has also reached base in eight straight appearances.

The Patriots are set to embark on a six-game road trip where they’ll face New Britain for the second time this season on May 3 and have their first battle with the York Revolution on May 6.
