The Grand Hyatt hotel in Manhattan was filled with baseball stars past and present as the 36th annual Thurman Munson dinner took place on Tuesday night.

Among those stars were current Yankees Brian McCann and Andrew Miller, current Mets closer Jeurys Familia as well as former Yankees pitcher Jim Abbott and former Mets pitcher Jesse Orosco.

Also on hand was former Yankees centerfielder Bernie Williams as well as Diana Munson, Thurman’s wife.

The dinner is set up by the AHRC New York City Foundation. The foundation is a non-profit fund-raising and grant-making entity that supports programs for children and adults who have intellectual and developmental disabilities and who live in New York City.

The dinner held for the former Yankees captain has raised over $14 million to help benefit children and adults with disabilities.

Diana Munson has attended all but one of these events and takes a lot of pride in the dinner.

“Tonight means everything to me” Diana Munson told Double G Media. “Its a wonderful organization and an amazing man we are honoring and the combination just touches my heart.”

McCann was also honored to be an award recipient, especially as the Yankees catcher.

“It’s huge,” McCann said. “What he did for the Yankees and this city and the kind of guy he was on and off the field, he really embodies what New York is all about.”

“Gene Michael used to be Thurman’s roommate when Thurman got in the big leagues and he told me that this Brian (McCann) he said you’re going to love him because he is just like your husband,” Munson said.

Orosco, a 1986 World Series Champion was also on hand and was happy to be there.

“I am very happy to be here today to except this award,” he said. “It’s a good reflection to see what the captain did in New York. He set the precedent and I feel really heartfelt for the opportunity tonight.”

“To be associated with the Thurman Munson awards is a great honor,” said Abbott. “I was watching this morning Ron Guidry strike out a bunch of Angels and Thurman Munson was behind the plate. It’s an honor to be working with AHRC in helping with people of disabilities.”

With spring training a week away, the Yankees and Mets will be battling for supremacy once again, but on this night, everyone is a winner, and the legacy of Thurman Munson lives on.
