Connecticut Whale Sign Four for 2018-2019 NWHL Season

The Connecticut Whale announced on Wednesday that they have signed four players for the 2018-2019 National Women’s Hockey League season.

Plattsburgh State College stars, Melissa Sheeran and Kayla Meneghin will join return Whale stars Juana Baribeau and Kaycie Anderson for the fourth season of the NWHL.

Baribeau, the Amos, Quebec native, a fan favorite in Stamford, Connecticut will be back for a third season with the Whale. The Clarkson University forward was the third leading scorer for the Potsdam, New York school as she put up 62 goals and 56 assists throughout her collegiate career. She was in the top four in scoring all four seasons playing for the Golden Knights.

Anderson, a native of Maple Plain, Minnesota will be entering her second season for the Whale. In 12 games during her rookie season this past year, she put up one goal and one assist.

The Northfield University forward scored 48 goals and 70 assists in 118 National Collegiate Athletic Association games. During her freshman season, at the Northfield, Vermont school, she broke every rookie scoring record, finding the back of the net 23 times and picking up 27 helpers in 31 games.

During her high school at Orono High School in Long Lake, Minnesota, she was named most valuable player three times in her five varsity seasons. Her 71 points during her senior season, ranked her as the fourth best player in Minnesota.

Sheeran, from Schaghticoke, New York and Meneghin, from Clifton, New Jersey both played for Plattsburgh State College, a part of the State University of New York in Plattsburgh.

Sheeran was awarded the 2018 Laura Hurd Award, presented to the best player in NCAA Division III women’s ice hockey. She also received the 2018 Northeast Women’s Hockey League Player of the Year and the 2017 Eastern College Athletic Conference West Player of the Year.

In 112 games for the Cardinals, she put up 97 goals while adding 89 assists.

Meneghin had similar stats for the Cardinals as Sheeran did. In 117 games, the five-foot-four forward put up 86 goals and 102 assists. During her sophomore and junior seasons, she was named American Hockey Coaches Association First Team All-American as well as Second Team AHCA All-American honors during her freshman and senior seasons.

The Whale open the season on Sunday October 7 at 3:00 PM, as they welcome Isobel Cup Final runners-up, the Buffalo Beauts to Terry Conners Ice Rink, in Stamford, Connecticut.
