Baseball After signing Wilson Ramos, are either Kevin Plawecki or Travis d’Arnaud on the move? With the signing of Wilson Ramos, will the Mets stick with three catchers, or is someone on the team expendable? by Jesse Natale December 18, 2018 The New York Mets have signed their 2019 catcher, Wilson Ramos, earlier this week. The 31-year-old agreed to a two-year, $19 million contract with a club option for a third year. According to Anthony DiComo, Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen has stated that teams have been inquiring about Kevin Plawecki and Travis d’Arnaud. The interest in these two catchers have only increased following the signing of Ramos. With catchers being highly valued this offseason, it is likely we may see a trade involving either of the two Met catchers. The question of whether Ramos will stay healthy is still up in the air. If healthy, however, Ramos’s big right-handed bat and “win now” attitude leaves little room for either Kevin or Travis. Travis, coming off Tommy John surgery, would be less likely to be moved. Despite the question of health, it seems Brodie visions Travis as a more versatile option over Plawecki. Brodie believes Travis can play both first base and left field, while backing up Ramos behind the plate. That said, Van Wagenen has spent a lot of time talking up Travis d'Arnaud's defensive versatility. He's mentioned both first base and left field as options for d'Arnaud, in addition to backing up Ramos at catcher. And he says the Mets can carry three can catchers on their roster. — Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) December 18, 2018 Overall, it’s tough to decipher which one of the two will be dealt, if any. Both Kevin and Travis have underperformed up to this point, while also dealing with constant injuries. The lack of production and health leaves the question of exactly what Brodie and the Mets would be able to haul back for either one. That is, unless another player is included in a deal, like a Juan Lagares or minor-league prospect. Regardless of the return, whether it may consist of money, outfield depth or pitching, expect to see one of these two catchers being dealt before the start of the 2019 season as Brodie continues to reconfigure this Mets ball club.
