Bump N’ Run returns after a two-month hiatus to bring you the best in tri-state area football punditry. It’s good to be back and per usual, there is a lot to discuss. Let’s begin this week’s return of BNR with a team that appears to be starting over.

The Jets Begin Anew…Again

Nick Mangold, Darrelle Revis and Brandon Marshall. Those are the names of three veterans that were cut by the New York Jets this offseason as the team begin rebuilding after a disappointing 2016 season. The question now for the Jets is where do they go from here?

Gang Green signed Josh McCown, the 37-year old journeyman quarterback, but the team still does not know what their QB situation will look like in September. According to coach Todd Bowles there will be a quarterback competition between McCown, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg, which does not scream competitive offense to anyone at all. Add in that the Jets signed oft-injured cornerback Morris Claiborne to essentially replace Revis for a subpar secondary and you have a team that at best, can win five games in 2017 and that is being very generous.

Even with a low win total, the emphasis in 2017 will be on effort. If Bowles can get this team to play hard week after week, even with losing games, Bowles will keep his job. If the 2017 New York Jets looks anything like the 2016 New York Jets, then Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan are out at the end of the season. It’s that simple.

The Giants Continue Spending Money To Compete

The Giants, after spending the GDP of a small U.S. territory last offseason, continued their spending in 2017 with the signing of wide receiver Brandon Marshall (two years, $11 million), TE/FB Rhett Ellison (4 years, $18 million) and D.J.Fluker (one year, $$3 million). While those are not astronomical numbers, the biggest haul went to Jason Pierre-Paul who re-signed with the team for four years at $62 million with $40 million guaranteed.   

The addition of Marshall is an upgrade over Victor Cruz, who the team cut early in the off-season, while Ellison gives BIg Blue a H-Back reminiscent of former Washington Redskins TE/FB Chris Cooley. All that is left is re-signing defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins, which is up in the air because both Hankins and the Giants are at a stalemate.

Everything else with the Giants is even steven as they will attempt to build on their good 2016 season and compete for the NFC East crown. The final step of their off-season will have to be to address the offensive line and secondary at the NFL Draft in a couple of weeks. If they are successful with those selections, you could be looking at one of the most dangerous teams in the NFL come September. Just please oh please, keep Geno Smith away from the field during the regular season for the love of god.
