The New Jersey Devils inked their 24-year-old defenseman Eric Gelinas to a new two-year contract. Gelinas was the Devils top offensive defenseman last season, with six goals and 13 assists, and the leader for defenseman on the power play as well, with three goals and six assists.

The young blue-liner has yet to eclipse 61 games in his short two-year stretch with the Devils, but the hope is that as he continues to grow and mature his game count will increase and so will his point total.

This is a good deal for the Devils. Gelinas is still young and affordable for the next two years giving them a chance to help develop him as a player while molding him into the team’s new system. It also gives the Devils a chance to help build around him on the defensive side of the ice to try and create a more complete defensive group in front of goalie Cory Schneider.
