Why getting rid of Joe Girardi hurt the Yankees more than it helped

As we all know, the New York Yankees decided this fall after a very nice playoff run that Joe Girardi will not be the manager of the team anymore.

During the playoffs, specifically during the ALDS series there was a lot of criticism towards the former Yankees manager. Specifically on his decision not to challenge a play that ultimately led to an Indians rally which then cost the Yankees the game. This was no doubt a bad decision by Girardi, and many Yankees fans then had it out for him. Girardi’s team still fought hard and made it to the ALCS and ended up falling one win short of the World Series. An obvious, over achievement for the young team.

Girardi did one thing that stood out while he was the manager, win. Girardi led his teams to a 910-710 regular season record. That’s 200 games over .500 and that’s really good last time I checked.

But, Girardi also did many other things well during his time at the head. To start, Girardi was a guy who knows New York. Not every single person in the world of sports can play or coach in New York and that’s just a reality, Girardi was a guy who could. Girardi also showed he was able to coach under high expectations. For example, in 2009 the Yankees were one of the favorites to take home the trophy and he was able to get his team to win it when it was all said and done. Girardi clearly showed he had the players fighting for him. They were able to come back and win after they were down 0-2 to the Indians. These players easily could’ve thrown in the towel like some other New York teams we know.

I also believe Girardi deserved to stay simply because he was the best option for this team. There’s truly not a better option then Giardi out there. It’s not like the Yankees are going to hire Terry Francona or Joe Maddon. They’re simply going to have to bring in an unproven manager.

In the end, I don’t believe the Yankeees made the right move here. They won’t be getting something better than what they had. This may really hurt the team. This seems to be more of a move made out of spite than a strategical move.
