Football Giants Sign CB Teddy Williams by Scott Rogust March 14, 2018 New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman has signed yet another familiar face during his time in Carolina. Dan Graziano of ESPN reports the Giants are signing former Panthers cornerback Teddy Williams to a one-year contract. Track Star Turned NFL Player Perhaps the most intriguing thing about Tyler, Texas native is that he was a former track and field star in both in high school and in college at Texas-San Antonio. While in college, Williams did not play football, despite being an All-State wide receiver at John Tyler High School. Despite not playing college ball, Williams attended Dallas Cowboys Training Camp in 2010, where the team signed him as an undrafted free agent. In his first season, he was used at both cornerback and wide receiver, before being released in 2011. After his time with Dallas, Williams spent time with the Indianapolis Colts, Arizona Cardinals, Chicago Bears, and Jacksonville Jaguars. Williams’ Time With Gettleman’s Panthers After his stint with the Jaguars, Williams was signed by the Panthers to a two-year, $2.3 million contract in 2015. Williams was prominently used on special teams in his first season, and was part of Carolina’s run to Super Bowl 50. However, Williams’ final two years in Carolina were riddled by injury. He suffered a knee injury in 2016, and missed the 2017 season due to a shoulder injury. Williams was released by the Panthers on March 7. In 36 games in his career, Wiliams posted 22 total tackles, three pass deflections, one interception, and one forced fumble. What Williams Brings to the Giants Gettleman brings in Williams to compete for a spot on the cornerback depth chart, after the release of veteran Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Not only that, but he might see some time on special teams. Williams brings his track and field speed to New York, in which Gettleman is all but familiar with.
