Career Perspective for Thomas

Thomas has spent the past four seasons with the Dolphins, where he was signed off the San Francisco 49ers practice squad. From there, he saw opportunities at both lot corner and safety. During his four year tenure, Thomas compiled 191 total tackles, six passes defended, two forced fumbles, one interception, and one sack.

Not to mention, Thomas saw significant time on special teams, where he carved his name as one of the best in the league. In fact, Thomas has one Pro Football Focus’ Special Teams Player of the Year in 2014, 2015, and 2017. In his career, Thomas recorded 55 total tackles on special teams, which is tied for the most in the past four years.

What Thomas Brings to the Giants

Thomas brings a veteran presence to the Giants defense, who has the opportunity to line up alongside Landon Collins. He would have to compete against fellow safety Darian Thompson for a starters role.

With the release of cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Thomas also has the opportunity to line up at the slot corner position. With Janoris Jenkins, Thomas could help bring experience in the defensive backfield. An interesting note is that he is now reunited with former defensive backs coach Lou Anarumo in New York.

As mentioned above, Thomas can be utilized on special teams as well, as his accolades speak for themselves.

Perhaps most importantly, Thomas exemplifies general manager Dave Gettleman’s persistence to bring in leaders. During his time in Miami, Thomas served as a team captain for the past two seasons.

The Giants bring in a veteran like Thomas, who could solidify his role as the team’s proverbial utility man.
