Has Michael Conforto finally regained his mojo?

For a while, it almost seemed like all hope was lost for the Mets. After starting out the year as the hottest team in baseball, they quickly crashed down to Earth. Several players were struggling to perform, one being Michael Conforto. Many wondered if he came back too early after dislocating his left shoulder last season. After all, heading into last night’s game, the 25-year old was hitting .191 with a .303 slugging percentage. Each game he was heading lower and lower in the lineup. It wasn’t until last night however, that hitting seventh for the second time in a row paid off.

Conforto ended up going 2-for-3 with a single and a walk. It was his second hit that was the most valuable one. After coming close to hitting a home run in the 9th, Conforto made sure to not let another opportunity slip away. He hit a rocket go-ahead two-run home run to right field, giving the Mets the lead. The ball traveled an estimated 428 feet. Along with a Devin Mesoraco home run, the Mets were able to slam the door on the Phillies, 3-1.

It was a huge relief for Conforto, as his patience finally provided some reward. Speaking to the media, he hoped his moment of glory can lead to more moments like that for the Mets.

“It can be a big jump-start for a team. We have to come out tomorrow and play the same way, do all the same things, execute. But we’re feeling good tonight, and that’s a good thing.”

Any chance to break out of a slump, especially if you are considered the future of the team, is always something to be happy about. After basically sleeping on the couch for the past few weeks, has Conforto awoken from his slumber? He has hit two home runs in his last four games and five hits in his last four. While the latter is a small sample size, it is something to look at if you are Conforto. It may mean he is seeing the ball better.

When the Cubs won the World Series in 2016, Dexter Fowler was a key component in that run. His saying during that time was, “I go, you go.” He was the driving force that helped the team’s confidence. With the idea of his mojo back, maybe Conforto can be that guy for the Mets once again.

While last night was an excellent moment for the young Conforto, tonight is a new night. Can he regain some of that magic, this time for the long run? With a busy schedule ahead of him, there is always time to believe that even the impossible can become a reality.
