The New York Liberty are not making excuses anymore, they are being aggressive in securing “the pieces” head coach Bill Laimbeer needs to make a legitimate run at the WNBA Championship. The talent level went up another notch around here as New York announced the signing of free agent Candice Wiggins, formerly of the Los Angeles Sparks.

Kristin Bernert, Senior VP of Business and Basketball Operations was straight to the point on what the Liberty achieved with this latest move.

“Candice is a fierce competitor who we know gives everything she has every practice,  every game,” Bernert pointed out. “While she is from the west coast,  she exemplifies the values of a New Yorker and perfectly fits the team’s style of play.”

Wiggins has spent seven seasons in the WNBA, five with Minnesota, following her third-overall pick status in the 2008 draft. She has the All-Rookie Team and Sixth Woman of the Year belts, but the most impressive hardware is the 2011 WNBA Championship  she won with the Lynx.

Despite stops in Tulsa (2013) and Los Angeles (2014) she is still a double digit scorer for her career and her ability to fit anywhere on the court will make her a valuable swingwoman for Laimbeer.

“Candice shoots the ball well from three point range and can play multiple positions for us, from lead guard to small forward,” said Laimbeer.

Bill is getting a surplus of talent whose commonality are a penchant for grinding it out every night.

“She’s a veteran who knows what it takes to battle every night and win in this league,” he continued.

Bill sounds like a coach who can’t wait until June 5 when they begin the season at Madison Square Garden against Atlanta with more than a dream in his back pocket.
